Created for Sunderland Art Festival 2025's "Steel and Sparks" theme, to celebrate Sunderland's industrial heritage, this piece references both the coal mining industry witht the miner's lamp, and a ship as homage to the industry that earned us the name back when we’d Mack’em!
Stained glass is also a vital part of our history, with Britain’s first stained glass made in Sunderland i, and glass being one of Sunderland’s biggest exports.
The dates on the scrolls note the year of Monkwearmouth Colliery's closure, ending the mining industry, and the year the last ship was built on the Wear.Sadly it seems that without intervention, the planned closure of the National Glass Centre will add 2026 to this list.
